Diarrhoea is a common problem and can be quite debilitating and can occur at any age.
It is when watery or liquid stools occur with a frequency more than the persons normal bowel movements.
Pain relief such as paracetamol is helpful if stomach pains are present.
Rehydration is the main treatment of diarrhoea.

If you have pain, then pain relief can be taken. Paracetamol is recommended as it doesn't make the stomach produce more acid unlike ibuprofen.
For adults only loperamide can be taken to slow down gut motility so water can be reabsorbed and the stools can become more formed.

When should I see the doctor?
Care should be taken with children and infants as they dehydrate very quickly so if they are limp and lifeless, have very dry nappies and a raised temperature then a doctors visit is necessary or other urgent care outlet.
For adults if diarrhoea is persisting for more than seven days or blood in the diarrhoea.
